CALL TO WORSHIP AND LORD’S PRAYER
Sisters and Brothers,
as we gather in the welcome of God's love,
as we gather in the joy of our unity in Christ,
as we gather in the power of the Spirit,
let us listen for the voice of God!
Let us worship God, who has spoken and still speaks to those who attend to the roar or the whisper of the Holy One.
In Jesus name, Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer (Click link to listen then close song page to return)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION & ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
Lord God of justice, you know no favorites and show no partiality;
but you have given us assurance that the prayers of the lowly pierce the clouds,
their petitions reach the heavens.
Look upon us who come before you as did the regretful tax collector,
and grant that we may open ourselves with confidence in your mercy,
and be justified by your grace.
We ask this through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE ~ Gloria Patri Performed by Marie Engle, mezzo soprano, with Ken Rodgers, piano.

SCRIPTURE~
Luke 18:9-14 The Message (MSG)
The Story of the Tax Man and the Pharisee
18 9-12 He told his next story to some who were complacently
pleased with themselves over their moral performance and looked
down their noses at the common people:
“Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee,
the other a tax man. The Pharisee posed and prayed like this:
‘Oh, God, I thank you that I am not like other people—
robbers, crooks, adulterers, or, heaven forbid, like this tax man.
I fast twice a week and tithe on all my income.’
13 “Meanwhile the tax man, slumped in the shadows, his face in his
hands, not daring to look up, said, ‘God, give mercy. Forgive me, a sinner.’”
14 Jesus commented, “This tax man, not the other, went home made right
with God. If you walk around with your nose in the air, you’re going to end
up flat on your face, but if you’re content to be simply yourself,
you will become more than yourself.”
